Business Development Manager / Relationship Manager Role
The business development manager (BDM) plays a crucial role in the success of the business to meet its overall ambitious growth goals.
Reporting to the managing director and supporting the leadership team, this role supports the key business pillars of PEOPLE, FINANCE, OPERATIONS, MARKETING and clearly SALES.
It’s the business development manager’s job to make sure that the agency continues to build and maintain a strong pipeline of relevant qualified leads for new clients (growing existing clients falls elsewhere in the business) and work with our marketing function to ensure a joined up approach to sales and marketing.
The role will include filtering and nurturing in-bound leads (we turn away more than we go for) but crucially also actively finding new opportunities with the right type and size of business. Managing our CRM system is vital and good knowledge of social media channels such as Linkedin and Twitter is definitely helpful.
This is no hard selling job though. The Smoking Gun way is much more consultative as we are looking to build long term relationships not Tinder moments! We have an envious reputation and many accolades to our name to help open doors.
You will need buckets of tenacity and common sense to help us cut through all the competing noise. An ability to show empathy and quickly forge relationships with a variety of personality types is crucial as you will often be the first point of contact and therefore impression of Smoking Gun. Building strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and external suppliers will be crucial.
The ability to quickly and clearly articulate our services and how they solve problems for clients is key.
From phone calls to trade shows, helping run our own events, to live web chats, you will be expected to ‘get your hands dirty’ whilst also showing maturity, the ability to think for yourself and taking responsibility.
The BDM must possess exceptional:
- written and verbal communications
- listening skills
- dogged determination
- organisational abilities
- a proven track of delivery of high quality leads
- grasp of the business’ commercial model
The BDM will lead a weekly team sales meeting and produce detailed and insightful monthly reports for the Board.
The job will carry specific KPIs to be agreed in line with personal experience and the business plan.
Previous experience in a similar role is vital – c 3 years probably with the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the process of selling and be target driven.
