Regular blog readers will know we love a little history here at this Manchester food PR agency and the restaurant’s memorable name comes from a piece of art depicting the famous Peterloo massacre, where a soldier was said to proclaim “chop em down my brave boys: give them no quarter they want to take our beef and pudding from us!???
This blog isn’t normally the home of restaurant reviews and neither is this piece in the strictest sense.
Team Smoking Gun was kindly invited along to the final dry run of the latest Manchester city centre gastropub offering, Beef and Pudding, on the site of the old The Crown pub on Booth Street. Being a mixture of evangelic eaters and gastro guzzlers, the team felt well placed to tuck in and give some feedback.
The name sets expectations of hearty carnivorous fayre and the menu does not disappoint. None of our vegetarian team members were with us on this occasion so we’ll report back on their views another time.
This is the latest venture from the New Moon Pub company whose previous eateries lie in the heart of Cheshire and whose head honchos boast enough credentials on their culinary CVs to make your mouth water just reading them.
With enthusiastic servers (whatever happened to waiters and waitresses?) and a simple yet stylish interior, we sat on a high table that seemed to be helpfully stretching us to make more room in our tummies for the feast ahead
And what a feast it was. Between us we sampled a ribs starter so generous it could have been a main and tasty it was too, along with pig cheek black pudding and Vimto infused spring rolls.
My personal piece de resistance was ‘The Pudding’, a crisply served suet pudding filled with choice cuts of beef and venison. Even a large appetite like mine couldn’t finish this off. My colleagues both enjoyed steaks.
We ended the meal with the sharing plank of desserts and the chocolate offering was the one our swords, sorry spoons, clashed over. The Eccles cake was last man standing, cutting a sad currant speckled figure like the last surviving Peterloo protestor but this time the gooey surrounds were coulis and sauce than poor man’s remains. Espressos perked us back up for the busy afternoon ahead, what better way to prepare for a new business meeting than a fine filling of quality food?
So who will like eating there? We’ve already ear marked a few clients to take for lunch who’ll enjoy the portions and modern take on British pub food traditions. Just don’t go if you’re not feeling hungry, it will be a waste.
