Thought for the Week

I fell in love with football as I would later fall in love with women: suddenly, uncritically, giving no thought to the pain it would bring.??? English author and avid football fan Nick Hornby discussing his passion for the beautiful game, which seems fitting to revisit given England’s lacklustre start to the 2014 World Cup.

Weekly High

Chewing gum isn’t always blessed with the most creative of advertising campaigns. Weekly Low

Following the U.S.A.’s unprecedented and unexpected win over Ghana in the Brazil World Cup Delta Airlines decided to get in on the action by tweeting the following combination of images, with America represented by the Statue of Liberty and Ghana a giraffe. Needless to say, it took very little time indeed for someone (or rather many, many Twitter users) to point out that you don’t find giraffes anywhere near Ghana. Doh.

Stories to keep an eye on

An independent Scotland could still have access to the BBC and National Lottery like the rest of Britain.
According to research by High50, only 4% of adverts in the UK are targeting the over-50s market, meaning brands might want to consider how they can tap into the demographic.
AC/DC, one of the most successful bands on the planet, who have now branched out into broadcast work and have their own branded beer and wine, could hit the road again by the end of 2014, marking their first return to the stage since 2010’s Black Ice tour- the fourth most profitable tour in history.
