A weekly roundup of talking points, sans effort

Thought for the week

” I want to thank ITV for their continued support and, most of all, all of you guys in the room who’ve slagged us off, written nice things, but it’s all been great – you’ve made us successful, loads of money – so thank you very much indeed.” Simon Cowell coming clean at the launch of X Factor’s tenth series, which kicks off on UK TV tomorrow.

Weekly High

A guy publicly proposes to his beloved in a Dubai shopping centre, she hits him on the head with a blunt object before marching off. The onlookers didn’t feel too awkward, mind as it was actually a Bourneville promotion that resulted in global coverage, and the invention of #notsosweet, which has been used by over 30,000 Twitter types in the last week.

Weekly low

Stephanie Banister is a One Nation party candidate hoping to be elected into the Australian parliament. For us Brits, we think they’re a little like the BNP. Except obviously far more stupid. Hark as the young upstart politician- aged just 27- manages to get pretty much everything factual wrong in this video report from a news station down under. Oh dear.

Just in case you missed it…

The BBC may look at its Twitter guidance for reporters on the frontline, just 12 months after drafting the policy, following a Gaza-based journalist’s inaccurate body count during an Israeli-Palestinian clash. Take a look at the full story here.
